Here's why every services based business needs an SEO strategy

Websites aren’t a “one size fits all” type of thing. Depending on what type of website you have, your needs and priorities are going to be totally different. Think about a lifestyle blog vs an e-commerce company vs a services based business… they all have websites but each one is going to look and feel unique.

Most of my clients are services-based business owners. I’d say about half of them run their businesses entirely online and rarely work with in-person clients, whereas the other half serve local clients and rely on their website to serve as their “online home”.

In both cases, these services-based business use their websites as a way to connect with their (potential, current and past) clients and customers, and promote their offerings online.

Services based businesses serve a whole variety of industries - we’re talking law firms, accountants, engineers, plumbers, florists, personal trainers, coaches, photographers, consultants, PR pros, social media managers, graphic designers, gardeners, dog walkers, psychics, bakeries, physiotherapists - you name it, the list goes on.

Some of these services must be performed in person (e.g., dog walkers, massage therapists, gardeners, etc.) but others can be done either in-person OR online/remotely (e.g., consultants, personal trainers, graphic designers, etc.).

Services based businesses can be one-off projects or ongoing, recurring services…. really, the sky’s the limit and there’s a huge amount of flexibility in services-based business models!

Almost all services based businesses, however, have a website. At this point, it’s pretty much a requirement because hardly anyone (except your granny) is going old school and looking up businesses in a physical phone book. Yes, we still rely on word of mouth and recommendations from our friends and family, but the trend is increasingly to connect with businesses online. More often than not, we check out a business’ website and then get in touch if we want to work with them.

But having a website doesn’t guarantee that potential clients and customers will find out about your business- far from it, in fact. All websites are not created equally!

That’s where SEO comes it - SEO can act as the perfect bridge between a website (think: business) and an online audience (think: future clients/customers).

I truly believe that every services based business needs an SEO strategy. Not only can SEO help grow your website, it also connects you to a much wider online audience who can potentially become paying clients and customers. Which, if you’re running a services based business, is the ultimate goal!

Today we’re going to cover the most important reasons why every services based business needs an SEO strategy, whether that website is on Squarespace or another platform.

How I became an expert at Squarespace SEO

I’m about to #NotHumbleBrag, sorry not sorry. Thanks in advance for letting me indulge myself and toot my own horn here in this blog post :)

LOL jokes aside, today’s blog post is a fun one that pushed me out of my comfort zone.

If I’m being totally honest, it feels a little weird to write this but it’s a topic that I’ve been asked about quite a few times over the past few weeks, and I’m not going to leave my readers hanging. People have been asking me how I learned so much about Squarespace SEO, how I became an expert in this super random niche, and how I set myself apart from others in the online space who also offer this service.

These questions have been landing in my inbox, they’ve come up during my Squarespace SEO Audit & Consulting sessions, and even a a few people have slid into my DMs asking about it haha.

Well, my friend, I’m here to share my own experience, thoughts on my journey and the learning curve, and let you know how I became the internet’s “go-to” source for everything related to Squarespace SEO.

Am I saying that I am THE ULTIMATE SQUARESPACE SEO EXPERT and that no one out there comes close to my skills and knowledge? No. The person with that top-honor title is probably employed by Squarespace and leads a team of tech geniuses at their head office haha!

What I am saying, however, is that I have achieved expert status when it comes to Squarespace SEO. I’m not trying to brag but I’m proud of my work and I hope that this post shows anyone who reads it that you too can become an expert in anything, so long as you’re willing to put in the hard work and shamelessly self promote #realtalk

Here’s why you should avoid keyword stuffing if you want to master Squarespace SEO

Ahhhh, keyword stuffing.

As a web designer and Squarespace SEO expert, I see so many website and small business owners making this mistake without realizing that they’re even doing something wrong, and it makes me weep for them.

Look, I get it.

Most websites act as an online “home” for a business, they’re basically a digital presence and a way to share information about products/services/offerings. SEO can take things to the next level but it can also be confusing as heck, especially if you’re a newbie or not technically inclined. In so many cases, the person who built or runs the website probably isn’t an expert. They’re figuring things out as they go, trying to learn and implement whatever they can to improve their website and reach more of their ideal audience.

SEO is hugely valuable because it’s basically free marketing, but that doesn’t mean that it’s easy to master!

Keywords are a key pillar to SEO but they can be hard to understand, let alone use and incorporate effectively on a website.

That’s why I’m so keen to share this post with you today so that you can learn all about keyword stuffing and avoid it like the SEO killer that it is.

What are keywords and how do they relate to Squarespace SEO?

Not to toot my own horn but as far as the internet is concerned, I’m the “go to girl” for Squarespace SEO. This means that I get to talk about this topic day in, day out. Good thing I like it haha!

Every day, I work with website and business owners to grow their websites, reach their ideal clients/customers, improve their conversion rates, and generally make more money online. SEO is amazing because it’s basically free marketing, but that doesn’t mean that you can expect amazing results without learning what’s going on!

A key component of SEO is keywords, and for some strange reason this term & concept sparks fear in the hearts of so many of you.

I’ve noticed that many people are irrationally resistant to learning about keywords or understanding how the role they play in Squarespace SEO, which is why I’m glad that you’re here reading this blog post today. It means that you’re ready to make sense of the subject and take total ownership of the keywords on your Squarespace website. It won’t be long before I’ve got you convinced that keywords aren’t all that daunting, hard or scary to figure out either!

I’ve briefly touched on keywords in other blog posts about Squarespace SEO but I fully realize that if you’re totally new to SEO, you are starting from zero here which is why it’s important to right back to the basics of keywords and build on from there.

Let’s take a look!
