Biggest mistake people make with the SERVICES PAGE on their Squarespace website - do this instead!

Hello my friend and welcome to today’s blog post all about the SERVICES PAGE on your Squarespace website!

We’re talking all about how you can improve the Services page on your Squarespace website so that it is more SEO-friendly but also is better from a user experience point of view.

People often make the mistake of designing and building their services page in a way that LOOKS aesthetic, maybe very sleek and minimalist, but the fact is that isn’t going to make Google happy or help you out with better SEO.

The goal here is to get more eyes on the services that you offer through your Squarespace website, and SEO can play a big role in that because better SEO means that you are getting more traffic from online searches. This means that someone does a Google search, your services page shows up in the search results, the person clicks over to your site, reads your services page and decides to hire you.

A better services page means more booked clients, and a FAT bank account - who doesn’t wan that?

Remember - the services page is a MONEY MAKER page on your website, so you want as many eyes on it as possible - and SEO can help you do that!

Today I’ll be showing you the #1 thing people get wrong when it comes to their services page - in otherwise, what’s the biggest mistake I see people make? AND DUH I’ll also show you how to fix this mistake, I’m here to help you make things better!

#1 mistake on the services page of your squarespace website

This video tutorial shows a demo website using Squarespace version 7.1. The process is pretty much the same if your website is on Squarespace version 7.0, don’t worry!

Squarespace version 7.0 & 7.1 - demo website for a fake company

This video tutorial and blog post shows a demo website using Squarespace version 7.1

The process is pretty much the same if your website is on Squarespace version 7.0 - a few things might be different in terms of Squarespace’s back end layout/where the different settings are located BUT it’s basically the same - don’t panic if yours looks a little different than mine, you’re smart and will still be able to follow along, I have faith in you :)

For the purpose of this video & blog post, I have created a demo website for a fake company. Use your imagination but consider how it applies to your own website!

#1 mistake people make on the Services page (aka don’t do this)

Without a doubt, there’s one single mistake that people make when it comes to the services page on their Squarespace website - there’s #1 thing that doesn’t work.

Basically what people do is they build & design a single Services page that has ALL the information about ALL their services.

The might have a page title “SERVICES” then go into Service #1 with a bit of info and a call to action button to “book now”, then rinse/repeat several more times below.

Yikes.

Everything is on one single page which means that there’s not really long form content to properly explain each service offered, which doesn’t help get a potential customer closer to making a purchasing decision. In addition, when everything is on one single page, it’s not optimized for SEO because Google is like, wtf is this page it’s a bit of everything and therefore not worth ranking for one single thing. Google deems this page not as valuable as other websites where each service is set up on their own independent page. Remember Google wants to give someone who makes an online search the best possible result that is highest quality and most relevent to their online search, so when its’s all crammed on eone page google says, mmmm no.

Think about it: if you have 3 services summarized on one single Services page, and someone does a Google search for one of those services - Google probably won’t return your Services page high at the top of their search results list becuase your Services page isn’t just talking about that ONE service that the person typed in … it also talks about 2 other/different services, which might not be what you’re looking for, so Google won’t prioritize you. Instead they will pick another website that has a page just about that one single service that the person is actually looking for.

From an SEO point of view, it’s actually a much better decision to build separate pages for each individual service as opposed to having everything on one single page.

Makes sense when you think about it from a technical point of view, right?

Better option #1 - Create a Services overview page that links out to separate pages for each service

The first “fix” is pretty simple and it works so well that it’s actually the format that I have in my place on my own website (at the time of recording in December 2023 haha).

What I recommend you do instead is to create a Services page that serves as an OVERVIEW of your various services, but then links out to separate services pages (usually in the Not Linked Pages section) which is where you go into each service in MUCH greater detail - think, long form content and everything someone needs to know about the service in order to make a purchasing decision.

The format here looks something like:

  • Page Title Heading 1 - SERVICES/ WORK WITH ME

  • Heading 2 - SERVICES #1 (title) followed by a bit of info that outlines the service (quick overview, main points that make it appealing/stand out) followed by a button that links to Service #1 page (where you go into much greater detail and have a full long form content keyword rich sales page)

  • Repeat for as many services as you offer

The Services main over view page would exist in the Pages section in the main navigation/menu, and then the various separate new Services pages would be in the Not Linked Pages section.

This is a MUCH better choice, both for SEO and for user experience. From an SEO point of view, Google will be much happier with this method because now that each service has it’s own Services page that goes into much greater detail & long form content, it’s THOSE separate services pages that have the better chance of ranking and performing well in online search results.

ON these separate services pages, its fine for the call to action to be Book Now/Inquire/Purchase because again, it makes sense contextually because you’ve given so much info about the service.

The Services overview page is there mostly for user experience, to really help orient potential clients who are on your website of the various services that you offer and let them choose what they want. This page won’t necessarily drive a lot of traffic - that’s OK! Instead, the traffic is driven from the independent services pages themselves because again, those are the pages that will probably rank well.

This is a little hard to explain with text so I really recommend you watch the video to see what I mean haha

Better Option #2 - Services folder with dropdown of separate services pages

This option is similar, in that we are creating NEW separate pages for each of the various services that you offer, but instead of using a Services overview page and linking out to each Services page, INSTEAD what we are doing is creating a Services FOLDER and then putting the various new services pages inside that folder.

In this case, the Folder is probably in the Main Menu/navigation and then all the new separate Services pages are within that folder, still in the main navigation section.

If you go with this option, then again each one of the new Services pages that you are creating for each service offered should focus on long form keyword rich content that is SEO-friendly and helps get a potential client closer to making a purchasing decision.

In this option, is also totally fine to have each separate services page’s Call To Action (CTA) to be Book Now/Buy Now/Inquire because you’ve given the reader all the info needed in order to make a purchasing decision about one single service.

Because all the services are housed in the drop down folder, it makes it easy for website visitors to hop between the various services - great user experience, very straightforward.

This is beneficial for SEO because again, Google loves separate services page that have long form keyword rich content so each of these separate services pages have a great chance of ranking on their own.

Final Thoughts

See what I mean? Services pages are the money makers of your Squarespace website so of course you want them to perform as best as they can!

This involves thoughtful design, user experience and SEO considerations such as long form keyword rich content that helps get a client closer to making a purchasing decision.

Don’t just cram all the info about your various services on one single page and hope for the best.

Instead, use either the SErvices Overview page that links out to separate services pages OR a Services folder with a drop down link to those various services page. Either of those options will be a much better choice and if you chose those routes, you will have wayyyyy better luck with SEO and conversions!

These are simple changes that can pack a big punch so I encourage you to try them out today!

Yours in SEO,

Charlotte xo
