Set up, styling & seo considerations for the paragraph text on your squarespace website

This video tutorial shows a demo website using Squarespace version 7.1. The process is pretty much the same if your website is on Squarespace version 7.0, don’t worry!

Squarespace version 7.0 & 7.1 - demo website for a fake company

This video tutorial and blog post shows a demo website using Squarespace version 7.1

The process is pretty much the same if your website is on Squarespace version 7.0 - a few things might be different in terms of Squarespace’s back end layout/where the different settings are located BUT it’s basically the same - don’t panic if yours looks a little different than mine, you’re smart and will still be able to follow along, I have faith in you :)

For the purpose of this video & blog post, I have created a demo website for a fake company. Use your imagination but consider how it applies to your own website!

What is paragraph text?

Simply put, paragraph text the regular text that appears on your Squarespace website. If you’re using Squarespace Version 7.1 it’s called paragraph text, and if you’re using Squarespace version 7.0 it is called Normal text.

If you go to any page/blog post on your Squarespace website and start playing around with the Text content blocks, you’ll notice that with any text you add there are options on how you want to style that text.

In Squarespace Version 7.1 when it comes to text you can choose to use:

  • Heading 1

  • Heading 2

  • Heading 3

  • Heading 4

  • Paragraph 1

  • Paragraph 2

  • Paragraph 3

  • Monospace

Paragraph is basically anywhere that you’re using a text box and are using REGULAR text. Nothing fancy or special formatting, it’s what is used most often on the various pages & blog posts on your website.

The default is Paragraph 2 and as such, that’s what I recommend you stick with - so keep that in mind when you start playing around with styling, formatting, etc.

Again, let me repeat it - the paragraph text is the normal text that someone sees on any of the pages across your website, assuming it hasn’t been styled or formatted with anything else. It’s the regular schmegular text that appears in most places across your website (web pages, blog post, product pages, event pages, etc.)

If you’ve selected paragraph text, you have the option to play around with that text specifically through bold and Italics but not much beyond that.

Style Paragraph Text

To change how the paragraph text appears or is styled across your website, you’re going to go to any page on your website and then in the top right corner click Site Style (the little paint brush icon).

This will open up the Site Styles dashboard and you have many different options to choose from:

  • Fonts

  • Colors

  • Animations

  • Spacings

  • Buttons

  • Forms

  • Image Blocks

Let’s say, for example, you pick the Fonts tab. Then on the regular page (to the left), you can click on any bit of text and then play around with what type of font is being used there. So, if you know that the section of text that you’ve selected is set up with Paragraph text, for example, then you can use the site styling to change the font used in the paragraph text.

You might play around with the paragraph text’s font (the actual font selected), the size, the weight, line spacing, etc. Lots to choose from here!

Down under the Size section is where you can really play around with Paragraphs 1-3 or whatever.

You might even take it a step further and set it up so that certain Paragraph styling is set to a certain color - there are so many options!

SEO considerations of Squarespace Paragraph text

When Google comes to crawl and index your website, they will land on a page and see that anywhere that you’re using Paragraph text, from a technical perspective it is set up with the HTML of just regular normal text. There is no special formatting in place when paragraph text is being used!

In other words, any regular normal text on your website is marked as Paragraph text, which Google will see hasn’t been altered in any way (beyond basic styling which doesn’t really affect anything from a technical point of view).

Paragraph text hasn’t been fancied up with any headings or markdowns. There’s nothing about paragraph text that indicates hierarchy on the page or anything of particular importance. It’s just NORMAL regular text haha

What does this mean?

Simply put, when it comes to SEO there’s nothing “special” about the paragraph text on your Squarespace website.

Google will see all that basic paragraph text when they crawl and index your page, but the aren’t going to make note of it as being anything unusual or noteworthy, nothing that stands out from a technical or structural point of view.

Final Thoughts

Now that you know what the paragraph text is, what purpose it serves on your Squarespace website, how to style and set it up and all that jazz, I hope you also understand what that means when it comes to SEO!

Basically Paragraph text is regular old text on your Squarespace website - there’s nothing special about it, which also means there’s no special SEO considerations to be aware of. There’s no formatting or any technical changes that Google will make note of - it’s jsut basic, normal, standard text that is most commonly used across your website.

I hope this helps clarify things for you!

Yours in SEO,

Charlotte xo
