This is a question that has been asked so many times lately, in both my consulting sessions and when I work with students in my group program/online course, so I decided I’d answer it once and for all so that everyone has access to this info :)

The question is: “Can I reuse the same SEO description across my website?” or else “Can I copy & paste the same SEO description onto different pages/blog posts/products/galleries on my Squarespace website?”

The short answer to that question is NOOOOOOOO you can’t! Hard no! Don’t do it, for the love of Google!

But here’s the thing, I also want you to understand WHY you should never reuse the same seo description across your website. Instead, my goal is for you to see why you need custom and unique seo descriptions for each page, blog post, product, gallery, whatever on your Squarespace website.

It’s not hard, my friend, you can do it haha.

Reusing the same SEO description across your Squarespace website - yes or no?

This video tutorial shows a demo website using the Rally template (Brine family, Squarespace 7.0) but the process is the same if you’re using Squarespace 7.1

A quick refresher on Squarespace SEO descriptions

Before we answer this question once and for all, you first need to understand what SEO descriptions are and where you can fill these settings out on the different pages, blog posts, product descriptions, galleries, etc. across your Squarespace website.

If you haven’t already, please read/watch Squarespace SEO 101: Beginner's guide to the 3 most important website settings and then come back and we’ll carry on.

Quick answer: No.

No, you can’t just copy & paste the same SEO description across your website. In other words, please don’t reuse the same description on all the pages, blog posts, product descriptions, galleries, etc. on your Squarespace website.

Long answer: Still No!

Squarespace SEO description fields are such powerful little settings because they’re your chance to tell Google exactly what each page/blog post/product description/gallery/etc. is about.

As such, you want to use natural language and include all the relevant and important keywords that are included and covered on that specific piece of content. Not only will this info be super helpful to Google as they crawl and index the content of your website, but it will also help them to return your website content in the right online search results.

The SEO description fields are powerful players in Squarespace SEO so make sure you’re using it to your advantage!

Think about it: the content on the Services page is going to be totally different from what’s on the Contact page, and that’s different again from a blog post or a product you sell on your website.

Although certain pages on your website might be similar, they are all unique. And this means that their SEO description must also be customized to each individual page, post, product, gallery, etc.

Contextually it won’t make sense if you re-use the same SEO description across the different sections of your site. Google will see the same info repeated over and over again and be like, ????????

So, take a few minutes to customize each SEO description field so that it makes sense to each particular page, uses natural language and covers the topics & keywords included in that piece of content.

A note on SEO description “templates”

In certain cases, it might make sense to create and leverage a sort of “template” for the SEO descriptions you use across your site. This is mostly for products, where you might have different items that are still part of a similar collection.

Obviously you still need to tweak each product’s SEO description so that is customized and unique to the specific product, but you can definitely use the same general format across the different products.

Final Thoughts

And there you have it, a friendly reminder to NOT reuse the same SEO description across your Squarespace website!

Please, please please make sure that you are writing unique and customized SEO descriptions for the different pages, blog posts, products and galleries across your site.

Use natural language, include relevant keywords and clearly describe to Google what each individual piece of content is about.

The SEO description fields are a small feature that packs a huge punch so please fill it out correctly, that’s how you’ll get the best results!

Now it's your turn to tell me, have you filled out the SEO description fields on your Squarespace website? Did you copy & paste the same one or write unique descriptions for each page? Have you ever used a template for the products?
